Merry Christmas & a happy 2015 !

Post by Bill Bentley » Thu Dec 18, 2014 5:47 am

Like any other species, regardless of what we humans do it affects the environment in which we live. Just by breathing we all produce CO2. By eating and drinking we produce waste materials which pollute the air, the land and the waterways of our planet. Unlike wild animals our waste products are heavily contaminated with chemicals, medication etc., most of which are synthetically produced and so do not easily degenerate. Even when we burn our chemically contaminated material waste it produces poisonous gasses and so we are upsetting all of the basic elements Earth, Wind, Fire and Water in an unnatural way.

Christmas has become a time of disgusting excess, which has little to do with the teachings in the bible. Other religions also celebrate with disgusting excess, which has little to do with the teachings of their Gods. The prophets can not be happy, even if the profits seem to please many.

If things are ever to improve it must start with individuals doing what they see as being right. This does not mean that one should not celebrate, but it does raise the question of how one celebrates.

This year Rahi and I will again celebrate Christmas by fasting.

We shall also, for the first time, not be sending Christmas cards to those friends with whom we have e-mail contact. In an attempt to reduce the burden upon MOTHER nature (millions of trees for paper, tons of chemical colours to make things look pretty and thousands of litres of fuel to deliver the Christmas cards) we want to send our greetings per e-mail.

Sure this is a drop in the ocean but somebody has to start somewhere. In future we would also be happy to receive your Christmas greetings per e-mail. If this idea works between us and our close friends, that will be about 200 drops, which is a mouthful of water for some thirsty soul somewhere. Now if that is not a good Christian gesture ... Merry Christmas !

For years we have not bought fireworks for the New Years celebrations. We just go out into the garden with a bottle of bubbly and watch everybody else's. If the weather is suitable we shall have a small camp-fire and roast a few chestnuts and chat with friends; the wet weather alternative is the same indoors on our log fire. We wish you and your loved ones a safe and healthy 2015 !
