Best Hawks Rugby Union Side (players in my time)

Post by tigger » Mon Jul 18, 2011 6:57 am

I was giving some thought to the best players in theRugby teams I played in during my time with the Regiment, and thought I would put together a best team in my mind of the players I had the pleasure of serving and playing with.

To those who didnt make the first fifthteen my apologies.

Tight head Prop: Mac Macnally
Hooker: Lash Ansell
Loose Head Prop: Taff Reece (Recce Mech)
2nd Row: Jumbo Lowry (The big Oaf)
2nd Row: John Lowe (Great ACC servant to te Regiment should have honery life time membership)
# 8: Skip Rae (one of my lifes honors to have played and served with him)
open side wing forward:
Blind side wing Forward: Dave Lee
Scrum Half: Bulldog
Fly Half: Cameron Hayes (see how I have mellowed giving credit to a Rupert)
Inside Center: Frenchie De Baune.
Outside Center: Dougie Allen (Reme, lovely kicker of the pill)
Wing: Ginge Mayall (when he wasn't trying to crown his opposite winger with a corner flag, God bless ya Ginge)
Wing: Rock Steady Eddy Walters.

Coach: Mick Greenwood

Reserves:
Mick Gheraty
George Kirk (for his enthusiasm)
John (Dusty) Binns,

Sponge Man Medic : Legs Dixon

I might have missed a couple but to those who feel slighted please dont as this is just my opinion based on my playing experience during those halcyon days when was was young.

Cheers Jonah

In Our Time

Small correction it was Dave Lowe ACC not John

Full Back Dave Leslie

Wing Forwards Lee & Jones

Most skillful and talented Dave Leslie & Dougie Allen

Like you It was a privileged to play the game with everyone who put our regimental shirt on, without another 17 players I could not have played gods game. I thank you all.

Fly Half has to be, George Fitzpatrick. This guy could turn the opposition inside out in a flash. Then give the ball to either George Smith or George Kirk in the centres and then those flying wingers Glyn Trigg and Ginge Mayall to score. Always thought Glyn was faster than George Kirk and Ginge was a another Billy Boston.

What about Nab, Maggot ?

Remember Nab hitting a receiving fullback on a really wet and muddy pitch. Nab was motoring and when he hit him they both went down. When Nab got up, there was no-one else in sight until a few seconds later, the fullback emerged from the muddy grave Nab had put him in.

Good old Nab, I'll never forget him. RIP

I remember Nabs last match the ball was passed to him in the open he had to make about 10 yards with no opposition within catching distance. He thunderd over the try line and made the triumphant dive and scored his one and only try of his playing career. The regiment erupted on the touch line. Good old Nabber what a smashing bloke.

Remember Nab as a gentle giant. In the inter squadron games we played I can never recall playing against him, thank God, praise be to Allah and anybody else you care to name ! Do remember though that when he tackled people they stayed tackled and didn't go for too many second helpings off him.
Another hard fella was Mick Early,(REME), think thats how you spell his name. Played hooker both for the regiment and Cmd & Supp squadron. Dave Bosher was another monster, nice guy but have him on your side or you might get hurt !

I recall a few of the players from your team. I played with some of them when i was attached as a chef to your regiment in Munster. I also played against a few of them for other regiments and in a 7's tournament in Hamburg.

Hi Bulldog and Dave, its lovely to hear from the two of you. It seems a long time ago since we were stationed in York Bks. The camp is due to be handed back to the Germans in the very near future. A mate of mine stationed in Germany forwarded on to me a few photo's of the camp that brought back some fond memories. I was already seving in York Bks with the QRIH and decided to stay in Munster when you replaced them in York Bks. I enjoyed my time very much serving with your regiment and had some brilliant times on and of the rugby pitch. Hope you are both well.
