Post by denis-smuts60's » Sun Mar 08, 2009 8:38 pm

Hi, I have in my possesion a medal presented to me for completing a cross country run whilst at Hohne Garrison.

I am not sure whether it was a volunteery run or a you, you and you situation.

Can anyone tell me the date of this run and whether it was voluntary or not.

Also is it a bronze??????

Denis were you not in the BAND? NO Bandsman ever volentered for Anything! :D
Our Daughter Sharon was born in BMH Berlin Oct 1960.Later we went to Celle before moving in to the flat over the cookhouse in Hohne. That must have been very late 1961 or early 62.Then it was on to Bengnasty. Don't think it was "gold" as I think Ben Grubb was still with us a a PTI,and he was a Army and Combined Services Champion! Bill

Ben Grubb was the AIPT in the gym in Herford 73/74. Also you say the guys in the band never volontered for anything check out Dave (Cumbrian Hawk) Higson the best cross country runner I ever knew in the regiment and is still putting himself through the Mill for charity.

Not a rebuke just a shaking up of the little gray cells. Your right The white city is now a shopping centre. No prizes for guessing which high st health and beauty chain have a store in there.

Bill,

I,m sure I was a member of the band at the time of this run.

Can I ask you another question, I think I have mentioned this to you sometime in the past.

According to Captain C.C.G.Ross writing in the HAWK (vol 4. no. 1- 1961) during the tour of Lancashire the band purchased an elderley van to carry the instruments during the recruiting campagn.

I was of the understanding that the van was purchased for someone to transport the band instruments back to Hohne.

Do you recall this?

By the way I was vollanteered to drive the van to Hohne.

I was told that the ferry tickets etc had been prepaid, they of course had not been paid.

I would like to find out from someone why I was volunteered for this task with not enough finance?

There is a lot more to be told about this episode, far to long for this email.

I have a photo of the van, don't know how to attach to this mail.
