Bill Butcher Memorial Golf Match

Post by Bob_H » Thu Jun 21, 2012 4:42 pm

I've now agreed details with the club where Bill was last a member.

The event will take place at Blackpool Park Golf Club (Stanley Park) and will be a stableford competition off full handicap to be held on Friday, 21st September 2012 with the first tee-off time being 10:04. With bacon barms on arrival and a sit-down meal following the match this is a great value event of just £15 plus green fee of £10 (reduced from £20 for us).

Hi Bob

Not a golfer but it's a nice tribute to Bill's memory. Good luck with the event.

Thanks Brian,

You may know that Bill was a great organiser of events. Over the years he has arranged many a comp to coincide with Reunions - he deserves it.

Hi Bob,

Bill was one of the characters of the Regiment whilst I was in and I had a lot of time for him. In keeping with the ideology of the event I would like to pledge £50 to the winner's favourite Charity (Not the winner himself!!).

Cheers

Mac

Mac,

That's a great gesture - I accept on the winners behalf with pleasure and gratitude.

... if this is turning this into a charity event, I'm not going to argue - brilliant. :)

Good luck to all players on Friday, sorry I can't be there but hopefully I will be the next time it's played. Well done Bob for your organising skills once again.

REPORT

The golf course has suffered owing to the appalling weather we've had recently and it was not helped by heavy rain overnight prior to the game. Thoughts of cancellation were being muted and it was looking like a disappointing damp squib was in the offing!

Not so!

In total a group of 20 golfers took to the first fairway to battle for the Trophy. We were very well represented by 14th/20th via myself, Phil Midgley, Alan Davies and Les Burrill. During the 'bacon butty' we caught up on tales of experiences with Bill and mixed with the other players. A group of five friends that Bill had become close to following his army retirement showed up vowing that "there is no way we'll miss it!", such was the feeling about Butch. The remainder came from the local golf club who had come to support Bill's memory.

After the golf, we had an excellent steak & kidney pie supper, followed with sticky toffee pudding with custard and coffee.

I made an introduction and spoke both about the golf and why we had assembled. Phil then added his amusing tales of Bill and then Bill's son, Ian, spoke at some length about Bill. The family made a good show with two sons, a daughter, wives & children. A fitting memorial to a great golfing friend.

The golf resulted in a win for local, Tim Andrew, and the trophies were presented by Bill's other son, Sandy.

Hi Bob,

My agreement to donate £50 to the winner's favourite charity still stands. As a non Hawk (Although he was obviously supporting a Hawk) won it you can speak with Tim or let Bill's family decide or I will donate straight to Noah's Arc.

I do not mind which.

Cheers

Mac

Mac,

Really generous. I'll speak to Tim first - agree completely with your comments.

Algy, et al,

I met Moge the other day and he's very happy for the trophy to be combated for again at the Dorset Reunion Golf Meet. Both Alan & I are happy with that too, so watch out for details as they become available.
