Ferret 33 BA 64 Hong Kong

Post by Lew » Fri Sep 21, 2012 8:01 pm

Hello all, nice to be here,
I am looking for pictures or even just stories of our Ferret Mk1 33 BA 64 in service, she served with the Hussars in Hong Kong from 1954 to 1972. It would be fantastic if any of you chaps remember anything, I know it is an awful long time ago and memories fade but somebody must have a picture of it tucked away in their loft somewhere! :D
Here she is as she stands today:

In the first instance I think the badge on the front wing needs changing!! Looks very like the 17/21 Lancers (wash my mouth out).needs the badge of the best cavalry regiment ever..the black Prussian Eagle of the 14th/20th King's Hussars.

if she was in service from 54 -72 you also might want to ask The Queens Own Hussars they were there 68-70 but if we were last reg owners kev is right you need a black prussian eagle in place of the lancer badge

I knew that might cause a stir  put there by the previous owners when she was restored about 15 years ago, dad and I have been thinking about painting her up properly, did the 14th/20th vehicles have their own pennants as well? She's apart at the moment having a wheel station and exhaust system rebuild along with all the other little jobs getting done so once that's finished we can think about doing something with it

Looking at my album of Princess Anne's visit to Hong Kong, I have newspaper cuttings of her driving a Mk 1 Ferret on Thursday 28th October 1971, but the number is 33BA67. I thought we only had one Mk1 in the squadron. I also have cine film of it being driven back to Sek Kong from Ha Tseun ranges, as we followed in the LAD LandRover. Does anyone have any more info?

While with the JLR as PS in 1964, we went on adventure training with the Boys on Dartmoor, I have fond memories of those times, I had a "Champ" as my form of transport, do the still exist, fantastic vehicle.Bill. :D

Thanks for that Bill, at the last show we went to with our CVR(T) Spartan a couple of Champs were there. Lovely vehicle, you used to be able to pick them up for peanuts but now a good example will set you back a lot of money.
Really close on the reg there Brains! According to the vehicle register there is a picture of 33BA67 somewhere fitted with a Carl Gustav recoilless rifle, current whereabouts unknown. I'm sure if you have a picture of it they'd be grateful to see it over on http://www.ferret-fv701.co.uk/

Hi WmO,

Re the Champ. Some time in the 60s it was made obsolete. As I understand it it turned over very easily. Does anyone remember in Hohne in 1962(?) Major English was killed while riding as a passenger in one which turned over.

Little anecdote. Reminiscent of Sir Humphrey. Shortly before it was made obsolecent someone in the procurement branch ordered a further 5,000, at a cost of 5,000 pounds each (?). As the contract was signed, sealed and delivered the order had to be honoured. They were driven from the factory, unused, direct to the Disposal site where as I understand it they were sold for 500 pounds each. I did hear that 400 were bought and shipped to Australia to be sold as 'dune-buggies'.
Sold like hot cakes.

Arnie :D :D :D :D :D :D
