Whats happening?
Hi Yall,
couldn't help but notice that things have slowed down on the site, certainly on General Chat. Has everyone taken advantage of that 'glorious' weather you are having in UK to go on holidays?
Spent some time reading the Berlin Bulletin, but it was way after my time (1960 to visit B Sqn for 4 days, but the train journey was something else (overnight in them days)) 1976 - 1978 in the Int Corps with 3 Int and Sy Coy. Enjoyable reading nevertheless.
Perhaps members could pick their favourite posting or city they visited which surely would invoke memories in other members. Berlin or Honkers would be mine, though didn't see much of HK except for the China Fleet Club and the Wanchai. My time in HK was mainly spent in the New Territories and on the border. Went back for a holiday last year and boy has it changed drastically.
We all seemed to have a great time in Hohne (Snake Pit and Range 3). Lets hear more.
In hopeful anticipation,
Arnie

Re: Whats happening?
Mr Arnie sir !
Brilliant suggestion, Hohne certainly evokes many pleasent memories, however, as has been previously written about Belize was my favourite, crackin six months that was !
I have been asked which was the best country i actually visited and Norway takes some beating, especially the way the Norwegians treated us, totally loved the Brits !!!
Just rather expensive !!!

Re: Whats happening?
Paul,
never got to Belize, but heard that if you went with a girl the question was not would you contact something, that6 was a 'given', it was 'what' were you going to catch.
Suppose everyone heard the story of the MO tasked with examining the 'girls' who found one clear. Went back to camp and changed before going back into town? Found the girl and promptly caught something. Probably an urban myth, but don't sound like paradise to me. Bow to your experience though.
Arnie.

MEMORIES
ONE OF MY MEMORIES IS DURING MY FIRST POSTING TO HERFORD IN GERMANY, AS A 17 YEAR OLD STANDING ON GUARD WITH ENOCH, LOOKING DOWN MINDEN STRASSE AND SEEING ALL THE OLD SWEATS STAGGERING BACK TOWARDS THE CAMP, PRAYING THAT THEY WOULD WALK SLOWER OR POP INTO THE IMBISS FOR A BRATTY SO OUR STAG WOULD BE FINISHED BEFORE WE THE GUARD OF THE CAMP HAD TO STOP THEM AND ASK FOR THIER ID CARDS AND GET A LOAD OF ABUSE. CERTAIN GUYS MADE OUR LIVES AS A JUNIOR SOLDIER A NIGHTMARE BUT WE SOON GOT USED TO THE BANTER AND GOT OUR OWN BACK WHEN WE HAD DONE OUR BIT.

Re: Whats happening?
Hiya Lads,
Although It has to be HK for me i have to say all my postings had something . HK had to be the VPP we had to go on ( village penetration patrol ), they were like the hearts and mind patrols but we slept on the floor and used choggie from the army vets with Mules to carry all our gear
Herford was just a great place to live and who can forget the border patrols ?, driving all the way in clapped out landrovers .
I think I'll gloss over Bovvy
Hohne , well what can i say. The Astra Bar and the legendry Snake pit to name just 2 of the watering holes we frequented.
Canada. Absolutely stunning places to see , loved the canadians never hadf a problem with them. The Assinaboi hotel was something else.
If i put more into it i could go on for ages but thats a quick run down without saying too much about what we got up to

Re: Whats happening?
Hi Yall
Billy, only ever met some Canadians when they came from Soest for their annual training to Schnevedingen. They were there for 6 weeks and we at HQ 7 Armd Bde in Soltau used to socialise with them. Great gang. One memorable incident involved this huge Cannuk who had to have been a lumberjack before the Army. Half of them had been back to Soest for a weekend. Naturally the other half hadn't. On the Monday evening we were all in the Cpl's Mess Tent when this giant shouted in full voice to a little weed of a guy who had not been home for the weekend. "Hey (name not supplied) Have you ever f....d my wife?' I mean what do you say to someone like that. "No! I haven't". Giant said "You should try. She's a much better f..k than yours." Brought the house (tent) down.

Re: Whats happening?
Will 8806,
agree with you on Cyprus. I always said that I could readily retire to 2 places, Cyprus or Ireland. The problem is though that in both places the people can't stop waging war with each other.
Billy, just noticed the name of that Assinaboi Hotel you mentioned in Canada. Sounds Gay to me, not that I have any problem with that, now that I have seen sense. Only joking.

Re: Whats happening?
As Billy said each posting held something HK was great but I would just like to point out The Village penetration patrol was a hearts and minds thing not the other type of penetration. Herford was OK but after nearly 3 years in HK it fell a bit flat. Bovington I was detached to ATDU interesting trials + I got on the sales team and done the far east it felt like going home. Hohne Now what a plce mind I did spoil it a bit by getting married it tends to calm you down A bit. Catterick oh the joy of walking over the North Yorkshire moors either with a shotgun or the family. Muenster I enjoyed my job but it dident have that same magic. Then its back to reality.

Re: Whats happening?
Hi Fellas'
I have just got back from Germany spend a week on the Coast near Flensburg and a couple of days in Hamburg. Flew into Hamburg and hired a car for the week in Flensburg before I dropped it off I drove down to Hohne for a quick look at some of the old haunts.
Obviously could not get into the camp "HQ 7 Armoured Brigade" must admit I was surprised at the number of Squaddies still posted in Hohne.
The Snake Pit is still there in another guise (Candy's)
The Bergenhof is now called O'Reillys
The other pub we used cannot remember its name (had a couple of visits from Irate Chieftain Crewmen a couple of occassions) is not there now. But on the corner by the traffic lights facing the Shell Garage is a Cocktail Bar
Ranges seem to still be going strong and the Target Factory is still there.
Had a quick look at the Quarters in Mozart Strasse, if you lived there and remember the 3/4 story high flats they have gone and in their place are some really nice houses, which are used as quarters too. Seymour Strasse is the same.
Had a visit to the Bergen-Belsen Camp and that has had some work done, there is a big Document Hall and and a place built inside for silent remembrance, etc.
Oh and the Camper Vans are still on Route 3!!
And guess what I forgot to pack my Flag what a bummer!!
Cheers
