DAVE FARRELL

Postby Brian Moulton » Tue Dec 30, 2014 8:00 am

Always wondered what happened to Dave Farrell, 2nd troop B squadron 1964 1965 then seemed to disappear. I seem to think that Dave came from Prestwich, and was a member of the same gang of us who went down to the beach every afternoon when in Benghazi. And anyone ever seen Noddy since leaving Benghazi ?

Hi Sol,
Dave came from the estate at the bottom of butterstile lane Prestwich, overlooking drinkwater park and the irwell.
He was a mate of mine pre army days.I seem to remember like Al and you,That I talked him into joining the 14/20th.
We used to share a car to come home almost every weekend while a perham down. But have not set eyes on him
since.
Knowing Dave some husband or husbands are still looking for him.

Was this estate called Carr Clough? I lived for a while in Rainsough in the new estate built in about 1968. The pubs close by on Rainsough Brow (pronounced BREW)
were the Staff of Life and the Plough, I had friends in Carr Clough. Used to play footy and fish in Drinkwater Park. (I'm still a Salford lad mind).

Could have been Carr Clough Estate John, I went out with a girl who lived on Lowther Road for a spell, but that was all private housing stock. There also used to be a transport ? cafe on Rainsough Brow (Us posh one's from Whitefield pronounced it Brow though). Ted's cafe would these days have had a cleanliness rating of at least -10, but none of us died. I remember one morning, someone asked to use his toilet, and his reply was "P**s in the sink, I've not washed up yet!"

No doubt John (Kerwin) could add more.

Ted's cafe would have been around 1961, as an apprentice TV engineer, we had to do a spell of aerial rigging (as a mate to the riggers), and that was the first port of call for the rigging crews after they had received their jobs for the day.

Probably a bit before your time John.

John
The Irwell was between the power station and the estate. In the land near the power station was the old isolation hospital.
In Canada you would rate the Irwell as a small stream. I believe its now got real (LIVE) fish living in it  . Back in the 60s only rats lived there :D :D
Drinkwater park was an old Army camp for the Boer and 1st world wars.

Fishing ? In the Irwell ? It was once rumoured that a shoal of deadly man eating Pirhana were found in there.

They were eaten before they could do any harm !
