Hawk badge

Postby Ian Neilson » Sat May 28, 2016 5:17 pm

Hi all,
I bought this hawk in an antique shop in Devon recently.
Any ideas on what/when and for who?
Approx dimensions 5.7 cm high, 4.6 wide.
Ian.

Ian. Is it an officers 14/20th collar dog. Seem to remember I had one that belonged to (glug Harris). It was left on the car I sold to John Rushton.
If that's any help.

Its larger than my old cap badge when I compare and probably too big for collar badges
I do not know of any brass rank badges.
I think it may be an officers service hat badge. It has been used and polished in the past evidenced by the orb being smooth on the front but with a pattern on the reverse.
Ian.

Looks very much like the "Angry Chicken" that the KRH now have. Seems to be a redesigned (& ugly) version of our original. Larger wings & angry beak!!

Ian

Just had another thought. Could it be an original Prussian Hat Badge.

Tony,
Thanks for that.
I assumed the letters on the badge were ER but on closer inspection I am not so sure that is the case now.
All of your comments have merit but it is too much like our own skipping chicken not to have some connection.
Perhaps it is older then my era say 40's or 50's. I still think it could be an officers cap badge having those letters on it.

In 1798 King George the third approved the regiment being styled the 14th(or Duchess of Yorks Own) Regiment of Light Dragoons, in honour of Her Royal Highness the Princess Frederica Charlotte Ulrica Catherina,Princess Royal of Prussia.
The Black Eagle is still considered the Royal colour of Prussia.
it could be the FR stands for Frederica Regina.

Hi all,
Thank you for your suggestions, I am now satisfied that the badge in question is the current MOD Issue Kings Royal Hussars metal other ranks gilt beret cap badge. Finding an exact copy online proved to be quite a task but eventually I found a site selling one.
I am quite surprised how much bigger this KRH one is compared to my old 14/20 cap badge but the website did not give dimensions to compare. From my search efforts it seems that genuine 14/20 badges are quite rare.
Anyway thanks again,
Ian.

One of the things I look for is the way that the orb is held.

With KRH it is grasped like it's trying to squeeze an orange.

With our own 1420H the orb rests gently in the palm.

I see what you mean Bob Ian's Badge is neither, it has 5 Talons which is neither us or KRH.
