Escalation of Troubles in Ukraine

Post by Bob_H » Wed Mar 05, 2014 7:42 pm

With news today that the UN special envoy to the Ukraine has been 'threatened' by armed men in Simferopol has seen a sharp escalation in the troubles there.

Clearly a divided nation with one portion wanting to become EU Citizens and the other wanting closer ties to Russia.

I feel that we may be just one short stupid action away from a war!

There's talk of European leaders putting pressure on Putin but they won't because they'd be afraid of Russia turning off the gas taps to Europe (they come, I believe via the Ukraine). If that happens we will be hit with rising gas prices and probably shortages which will effect the poorest in our society the most, they're least able to pay more to heat their homes. Meanwhile in our country we all shake our heads and protest about fracing which would help ensure our energy security. A lack of energy security means that we will need to import gas from Europe much of which...you guessed is controlled by Russia. :?

Fracking is slightly of topic - but relevant.

On Granada TV yesterday they featured eight people who were undecided about the value of fracking, and they received presentations from a consultant of Quadrica (I think) and a representative from Friends of the Earth. After site visits and discussions over a coffee in a Community Hall they expressed their feelings:

1 of the eight was against Fracking
2 were undecided
5 were in favour
